Module 9 Assignment

Under the circumstances outlined, it is unclear if the software is truly pirated. Depending on the license agreement of the software, the user may install it multiple times on multiple computers or be liable to installing it on one computer. However, this plays into copyright laws as well, in terms of ownership (again, this would most likely be cleared up by the license agreement). Nevertheless, the concept of ownership is a controversial topic… especially in terms of reproduction and distribution. On one side, many would argue that after something is purchased, then it is the soul property of that person and whatever action is taken henceforth is up to their discretion. However, there are gray areas as well… such as royalties. In most cases concerning software, most if not all stipulations are outlined in the license agreement. Also, it is usually safe to assume that reproduction and redistribution is prohibited… I suppose the real question is: Do you think you can get away with it?

a) A) So is it ok to borrow the software in this hypothetical? It depends… I would wager it’s probably prohibited and frowned upon, but most people would fail to act on its unlawfulness. Yet, there are many programs that are offered for free, or have similar counterparts on the web that are free as well.

b) B) I would say that it is still viewed as wrong, but if the case was ever brought before court the judge might be more lenient if the perpetrator deleted the software after its use. Under the circumstances of the crime and the nature of the offense, I highly doubt it would ever go that far, unless this was government property of the creator of the software was able to identify the offender and take them to court.

c) C) If the software was on the school’s network, it is more than likely free to students as University’s have contracts with software developers for licensing their product. Often times, the final fee of the developer and University’s agreement is allocated to the student by means of tuition. Regardless, if the software is made available then it is probably there for the use of the students. On a side note, Universities and other institutions have deals with developers that allow students to buy suites of software for a highly reduced price, in some cases you can bypass copyright infringements if it is proven that the “crime” was for educational purposes.

Midterm Essays

Complete three of the following four essays. There is no minimum or maximum length requirement to the essay. Essays are due on your blogger site by March 6 at Midnight.
Essay 1
In the movie, Triumph of the Nerds, Steve Jobs is quoted as saying "good artists copy, great artists steal." Do you agree with this statement under the context of the movie?
Essay 2
Discuss at least three reasons why it pays to be a knowledgeable computer user, or to be computer literate.
Essay 3
E-mail has quickly caught on as the primary method of electronic communication. List at least four of the benefits to utilizing email. List four of the drawbacks to using email. Think of your response in terms of users, organizations, and general society as a whole.
Essay 4
Define affective computing. What impact do you think computers that are capable of affective computing may have on you? List and discuss at least two advantages and two disadvantages.

1) Pirates dock at Silicon Valley...

It has been said that the mother of invention is necessity. There is also a theory that war times have given birth to some of the most influential technological breakthroughs (I would attest that this is arguably so… I'm sure there is much we in the private sector are unaware of). Now, when we take these statements and compare them in context to Steve Jobs and the Apple Corporation, especially with the aforementioned quote about artists, it procures an almost dichotomous emotional response. On one hand, we must give credit where credit is due… however dishonest its foundations might be. The Apple corporation in which Mr. Jobs is accredited with founding (alongside Steve Wozniak) has its roots in an era that was hazy to say the best (haha get it, hippies.. ok but seriously). Actually, since the computer industry was spawned from hobbyists, there was much collaboration in the efforts towards its initial advancements. This backdrop of development allowed for "shady" practices in which some could benefit from the works of others, if they were so inclined and business savvy. Case in point Apple. Now as we look back and see how the company has grown, is it right that a few people made millions while others are lost to computer antiquity? Personally I think its rubbish, but then again I'm aware of the cutthroat nature of capitalism and the way the world works so if anything it must be taken with a grain of salt. However, does the ends justify the means? Apple has done a lot for the computer world over the years, and its impact is quite clear if one takes a look at the current market. But, is this quote a confession that Jobs indeed stole ideas? It's hard to say exactly, as the continuity of Apple's past depends on how you talk to (youtube Jobs and Wozniak and listen to them dispute references made to them in the media, is Pirates of Silicon Valley)
I suppose before we focus entirely on Jobs, we must recall that the original quote is credited to Picasso. Picasso, as we are all aware of, is recognized as one of the greatest artists in history. So how does this reflect on his integrity? Is stealing a concept and changing it to make it your own, really stealing? If someone can create a masterpiece from another’s initial idea, someone say without the means to actually implement their idea… is that stealing? Who should be awarded the credit, the artist or the visionary?
When I personally think about Jobs I have emotions of disdain and distrust, and my wallet cries. I understand for business and capital reasons why the industry leaders act the way they do, but I also have the humanitarian side that strives for the best possible scenario in regard to public interests. Really, should we have to conform to one format over another per say? Should we have to shell out a major wad of cash for products that are cheaply manufactured? (again, this can be applied to most businesses, Microsoft for example) but at the end of the day is it better to help the world, or get rich? I don’t think that this quote helps Job’s public persona, as I feel it’s almost a confession towards a lack of integrity and affirms his motives as a business leader. I almost feel that it’s a blatant statement that is used to laugh in the faces of those that work passionately towards their goals. If anything, it’s like telling the world that in order to succeed you have to be morally flexible. Simply put, crime can pay but there’s always a victim.

2) Reasons to be Computer Literate

The General Statement of Truth

The world is increasingly becoming more digitized in aspects that have far reaching application and effect.

So why should a normal person become more savvy with computers?

· Communication, the world is “shrinking” thanks to computers, and in order to participate with the new community one must be aware of the new pathways and how to utilize them. Information is readily available at your fingertips, but it’s useless if you don’t know how to acquire and manipulate it.
· Jobs, it literally pays to have computer skills, as an Informatics student it is the very core of what we do with our lives in that we apply technology to a concentration or pre-existing field. We work towards advancements to better the world around us, than in itself could be the sole reason to become computer literate.
· Maintaining and understanding your personal resources, this in essence is like comparing the need to understand how to take care of your car or your home. As we progress into the future, many of our daily routines will revolve around computing. Knowledge has been regarded as power, but it is also a critical component to surviving in your environment. In order for us to continue on, we must adapt or we will certainly be left behind.

3) Email Pros and Cons

It is quite clear that technology has altered the world in which live, from our personal day to day lives to our professions. Yet, with every advancement we make forward, we must be aware of the downfalls of our new path. For one thing, as we advance, we must consistently acquire a new skill set. We must also make ourselves aware of the potential for problems within a new system… at least realize that something could go wrong. When we apply the notion that nothing is perfect, and we focus on email here is a quick list of pros and cons.

Pros
· Allows for quick transmission of large amounts of information in a semi permanent format
· Can be sent to multiple people, or users in a network setting
· Helps reduce waste produced by paper, is a step towards saving the planet
· Can include other types of information aside from print, links to websites as well as audio and video which is a vast improvement over standard mail

Cons
· Impersonal, lacks the human element of a phone call or the intimacy of hand written letter
· Easy to miss important emails if you don’t check frequently
· Can be potentially harmful if they contain malware, phishing and viruses
· Electronic forms of data are not physically permanent, and can be erased or lost very easily (not that this doesn’t happen with physical copies either)

The Watershed is on Fire?

so i just recently discovered that watershed is a term used by the media to describe permissable times to display adult content. as a former telecommunications major and a current informaticist in training i am slightly bewildered by this notion, and yet am not at all taken back by its existence - even more so by the name trying to dismiss its role in its bland demeanor

i suppose this is nothing new as many of us are aware of the FCC and other satalite groups who support censorship of the media, *** is censorship a crime??? i would think so if you look at the constitution, but is it such a black and white scenario... or are we lost in the gray

but i guess what i wanted to ask, no what i wanted to pose was why do we need such an unregulated (its different depending on where you live) system? (check out http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Watershed_%28television%29 yea i know its wikipedia, but just look)

it would seem to me that despite parents best intentions, there are too many pathways for children to find, or worse*?* be exposed to adult content... and its becoming more prevalent everyday as the internet culture continues to expand, and news media evolves (to what i dont really know) as well as television programming in general becoming more saturated with "strong themes" ... also, what good does it do by allowing the content your trying to keep off tv on later in the night? why not ban it? or why not allocate it differently?

if you think tv is the only source for this type of "content" dont forget schools and other areas like malls where children dwell, and what advertisers consistenly push (i'll leave the details of sex appeal, fitting in, and all that jazz to you)

i guess what i am quickly trying to get at is why do we enforce a practice that is becoming archaic becuase it can be so easily bypassed? almost anyone can access the internet, and we all know what the biggest facet of the net is inclined towards, a certain adult industry, this industry that even garnished a tv show on E (something like chics that are our neighbors), and industry that makes billions

(im not against the industry, im just using it as an example of what most would blatently consider adult material)

i understand there are steps being taken, v-chips, software programs, church rallies, and concerned parents doing their best the best way the know how, etc etc but is it really doing anything at all

also, this is a huge controversy, but what damage are we doing to our children by exposing them to adult circumstances or "themes"

i understand its probably for the best if you dont show a 3 yr old a slasher flick, but in some ways might we be limitting our children from partaking in the world they inhabit just as much as the rest of us "adults"

and what if we told the kids the truth? what do you think would happen? are we affraid of sharing the realities with children because we are ashamed of it ourselves, or do we do it to preserve a notion of innocence?

i for one feel that there needs to exist a healthy medium between sheltering a child completely and overdosing them on pop culture...

but how do we do this? is it even possible, is it the eternal struggle for parents and society?

we reap what we soe, but what crops are we going to need in the future

is it better to perhaps have a more educated and (experienced) youth that will be better acclimated for the future they are bound to inherit, or is it like ripping a band aid off or jumping into cold water, best to do it suddenly

we could loosely tie this to sex education and when is the appropriate time to gather the kiddies and tell them about the birds and the bees

actually im going to run with this for a min

i had a professor once who raised an interesting notion, what if we teach sex ed in kindergarten and get all the anxiety over it out of the way

for one, we are all human and even a child is somewhat familiar with their own body

why should we be ashamed of something that is completely natural and major part of life, why do we feel so compelled to hide the greatest gift god gave us (ok i dont want anyone ripping me apart for that, i do understand different religions and cultures have their takes on these type of issues)

do you think it would be easier to eliminate the sex ed question early on, and bypass problems like children ... well, being childish and snickering at words like pen.... (im doing my best to keep this as clean, and i am aware of the irony of censoring work about censorship, but im looking to raise attention... and not get banned for being vulgar in any sense)

In short, what good are we doing by preventing children from seeing the world as it really is?

Assignment Uno Post

A Mean to an End?
Revolutionizing our Priorities
helping each other

The above link is a news post about a gentleman from Indiana who lost both his legs during our current "so called WAR" in the Middle East. I will stray from my opinions about the War and how I feel about it (why are we screwing ourselves and posterity over with all this, when we could be investing time, money, and man power into facets to better humanity and the world ~ renewable resources, hydrogen cars anyone... OK I'm done I promise) Needless to say, and despite the fact that accidents can be avoided, a lot of of good people merely wishing to do what they think (or told) is best for their country and families (so on and so forth) get injured in the act of duty. I suppose its a fact of life that sometimes bad things happen, but the real defining point of ingenuity ^1 (in coordination with humanitarian efforts) is what can we do about it.

This article, despite being brief, is a great insight into what the future holds for humanity in regard to bettering ourselves and situations. Here we see technology (blue tooth of all things ~ you know those glowing ear pieces that make people look schizophrenic if you see them talking on them from the wrong side of their face) . But yes, here is a step forward in helping those in need... and I would say its a great step forward for this man in particular. So many of us take for granted our common healthy state(s) of existence, but for anyone that has broken a leg or suffered any kind of temporary handicap, you can appreciate all the more what this man must be feeling after getting the use of his legs back. It just blows my mind, to think that we can do all this... how far we have come, and even more so.... how we have linked one technology to benefit another ~ AMAZING!

Just think of the applications ( aside from well say the 6 million dollar man scenario) of what these new prosthetics's could do for those out there suffering. Now I know I've come off as a bleeding heart liberal, but really isn't sad to think that we could do so much in the world, and yet we simply choose not to focus on these issues (you can choose your own issue). Well, the few are making strides, and some "few" are ruining things for others. I suppose that is the state of the world, but to think..... what would it be like if real democracy was practiced, if we all were granted the rights to a politically unsaturated and free education. To think what we could build and accomplish if we could look past handicaps ~ physical or emotional, racial and sexist, political inclination left or right etc etc

I think this article proves we have the capability to start making advancements in all the right directions and hopefully as we become even more intrinsically entangled as a human race, we will see much more of these steps forward. *** especially in congruence with informatics on the rise *** (i know its a lame tag, but yeaaaa... )
